Frontline Series - “Truck Roulette”

Truck Roulette

From the Frontline Series — Written by a Crew Member Who Just Wants to Do His Job

There’s a game we play every morning.

It’s not fun. It’s not fair. And nobody wins.

We call it Truck Roulette.

It goes like this:

You show up to the yard.

Grab your coffee. Say what’s up to the guys.

And then start scanning the lot trying to figure out:

“What truck am I in today?”

Is it the one I’ve had all week?

The one with the broken backup camera?

Did someone take my cones out again?

Where’s my cooler? Where’s my fuel card?

It Shouldn’t Be This Way

I don’t need much. I’m not asking for a limo.

I just want to know where my gear is.

Who I’m working with.

What site we’re going to.

What truck we’re using.

But in a place where nothing’s clearly assigned, and the plan’s changing in everyone’s heads — it’s chaos.

Every Morning Feels Like Starting Over

One day I roll in and the truck’s already gone.

Another day it’s locked, and no one knows who has the key.

Sometimes there’s a new guy in the seat I usually ride in, and no one told me.

And here I am, standing around like an idiot with my lunchbox in my hand, waiting for someone to say where I belong.

It’s frustrating. It’s embarrassing. And it sets the tone for the whole day.

And When You Ask…

You ask your manager, and they’re juggling 17 things already.

“Oh, yeah, uhh… you’re with Dana today. In the Ford. Maybe truck 18. I think.”

Cool.

Except the Ford has four trucks in the yard.

And no one’s sure if truck 18 got fuel.

And Dana? Already left because he didn’t know I was with him.

It’s Not Just Logistics — It’s Culture

Here’s the part that hits deeper than people realize:

When you show up and don’t know what truck you’re in, what crew you’re on, or where you’re going…

You don’t feel like part of a team.

It’s subtle — but it wears on you.

One day you’re joking with the guys.

The next, you’re in a truck with someone who doesn’t even know your name — doing work you didn’t know was on the schedule.

That’s not how you build trust. That’s how you build turnover.

Then Came CrewHero

Now?

I wake up, check my phone before I even put my boots on.

✅ I see my truck assignment

✅ I see the job we’re on

✅ I see who I’m with

✅ I see if we need tools or extra equipment

No guessing.

No last-minute panic.

No starting the day already irritated.

I load my lunch, gas up if needed, text the crew if I’m running late.

I walk into the yard ready — because someone actually told me what was going on.

Final Thought

We’re not asking for much.

We’re not trying to be divas about trucks.

We just want to start the day with clarity — not a scavenger hunt.

CrewHero didn’t make the trucks nicer.

It just made the system make sense.

And when you give people direction from the start, they give you more energy, more focus, and more pride in the work.

And end Truck Roulette for good.

One of the guys who’s just trying to start the day on the right foot
